80F Cowell Coffee Shop Event Shifts

Greetings 80F students! Thank you for joining us at the Cowell Coffee Shop this quarter to participate in our Ethnic Resource Center Partnership events! As part of your participation in the 80F course you are required to sign up for one prep or service shift this quarter with us.

The Resource Centers (RCs) comprise of the four Ethnic Resource Centers: African American Resource and Cultural Center, American Indian Resource Center, Asian American / Pacific Islander Resource Center, and “El Centro” the Chicano Latino Resource Center; the Cantú Queer Center, and the Women's Center. Each of the 6 resource centers offer students various services through academic, cultural and community support activities. Throughout the year, the RCs host programs and events that connect students, staff, faculty and community members in both social and professional, academic settings. Students have ample opportunities to network and create community spaces, to engage in stimulating and critical dialogue, and to find connections in hope of building a positive and empowering space for all communities.

Basic Needs, The Cowell Coffee Shop, & Food Systems Working Group, along with the Center for Agroecology Farm & Garden sites, work with a different campus resource center each month to stage a collaborative event and meal kit around a different cultural foodway, highlighting a broad range of culinary diasporas and narratives around foodways. Staple ingredients from these recipes are incorporated into campus pantries as regular distribution offerings. CCS + FSWG coordinate with farm and garden site managers to plan crop harvesting timelines to try to align culturally relevant produce and heirloom varietals with the harvest dates of collaborative events.

These events can comprise of a virtual or in person guest speaker, film screening, musical performance, or interactive event.

We have four collaborations this fall:

CALAVERAS Y COMMUNIDAD
Working closely with El Centro, Calaveras Y Communidad is a crafts and workshop focused event at the Coffee Shop celebrating ofrendas and dia de los muertos in the week before dia de los muertos. Stations will be set up featuring tamale making, sugar skull decoration, paper flower making, letters to the dead, as well as a bountiful table of sopa, pan dulce, jamaica, horchata, tamales, salsa, y mas!

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
Dia de los Muertos is a collaborative effort here at UCSC by various on and off-campus groups organized through El Centro. It is a series of events designed to bring the community together, educate, and present an opportunity to take part in a cultural tradition.

The CCS will be bringing our Mobile Food Hub to the Quarry Amphitheater to serve scratch mole, arroz, y frijoles to over 300 guests.

INDIGETHANX
Indigethanx is the AIRC’s alternative Thanksgiving celebration. The goal of this event is to provide the campus community an opportunity to rethink the Thanksgiving holiday. Additionally, it serves to help educate the UCSC community about traditional Native foodways. The center alternates every year between serving a meal and hosting a speaker.

This year, the event will be at the Cowell Hay Barn, and the Coffee Shop will be preparing a traditional family style multi course meal for approximately 100 people.

AAPIRC DUMPLING WEEK
In celebration of week 10 and our Asian American/Pacific Islander students, we will be making and distributing 100 dumpling meal kits so that students can make and form their own dumplings at home.

Simultaneously, we will also be activating our 80F Students to make and pleat thousands of dumplings to serve downstairs at the cafe all week long!
