International Student Adjustment: Practical tips for student affairs administrators

Abstract: International students face a number of unique issues on our US campuses. Yet, unless you've experienced it yourself, it can be difficult to understand. This free conference call will help student affairs staff learn about the adjustment issues with international students and how best to serve them. Topics will include: 1. What are Typical adjustment issued that international students face? 2. How can student affairs practionners best serve international students in their transition?

This Hot Topic will benefit any staff member working with international students. This might include but is not limited to the following areas: housing and residential life, career services, counseling, deans offices, academic advising, two year colleges and universities, international/study abroad, administrative personnel, etc.

Speaker: Speaker: Dr. Sylvia Chen is a staff psychologist at the Counseling and Mental Health Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Within the counseling center she is the international student specialist whose responsibilities include coordinating and providing clinical services to UT international students through individual and group counseling, consultation and outreach programs. Sylvia is actively involved in training on diversity and multicultural issues, and provides consultation to Student Affairs and other campus departments. Having been an international student herself, she has the professional knowledge as well as personal experience in issues related to international student adjustment. Dr. Chen received her Master’s degree in Counseling from Michigan State University and her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University.
