Creating a Dialogic Culture with Leslie Garvin

As we prepare for the upcoming year and the presidential election, we are hoping to create more spaces for civil dialogue that still affirms the humanity of everyone, even those that we adamantly disagree with. We know that debate and discussion are important tools for discourse, but dialogue can be a useful tool to converse across difference and conflict. To assist us in building our dialogue facilitation skills, we are inviting Leslie Garvin to campus to work with student leaders on August 19th and host a special faculty and staff session on August 20th for those interested. Leslie Garvin is the Executive Director of NC Campus Engagement providing faculty and staff professional development initiatives and builds partnerships to expand higher education civic engagement. Her session, Creating a Dialogic Culture, will be held in the Faculty Club from 2-5p on August 20th. Some of the learning outcomes we seek to fulfill with these dialogic tools for our students are:

1. Effective Communication Skills – Develop skills in articulating thoughts clearly and listening intentionally.
2. Mutual Respect and Understanding Across Differences -Promote openness for cultural, social, and ideological diversity.
3. Conflict Navigation- Develop skills in managing and handling conflicts constructively.
4. Critical and Creative Thinking- Encourage synergy in personal and professional beliefs, values, and experiences to act.
