Service Excellence Book Club - "Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting out of the Box"

Hosted by dzajchowski@rollins.edu

You are invited to join the third Rollins College Service Excellence Book Club meeting! The Service Excellence Book Club is an inclusion leadership and service excellence learning program involving staff, faculty and students who come together to discuss, respond, react, and apply lessons learned from a current leadership text. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch to the sessions.

All members of the campus community are invited to read "Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting out of the Box " by The Arbinger Institute and participate in a conversation about how this applies to our work at the College.

We will host two (2) meetings in March to meet and discuss the book (both meetings will be the same and you do not need to attend both meetings). The meetings will be facilitated by Susan Bach, Executive Director Center for Leadership Development at the Crummer Graduate School of Business, and David Zajchowski, Human Resources Manager.

Space is limited and interested people will be required to sign-up below and acknowledge that they will obtain a copy of the book, read it and attend the book club meeting. Additional offerings of this workshop may be scheduled if needed in accordance with demand. We look forward to seeing you there!

The book is available to check out or purchase in multiple locations. Below is a partial list of where you can find this book:

- Olin Library (multiple copies)

ABOUT THE BOOK & AUTHOR

What if all the “people problems” we have in the workplace, the home, and our communities were stemming from a problem within ourselves? What if that problem was right in front of you and you were the cause? What if we could end the blame game that cripples our relationships in all those different areas of our day?

In the book, Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box, the Arbinger Institute presents a case in an easy-to-read business fable about a new manager in a company and how his self-deception is a problem he must tackle to adapt to the company culture. Throughout this book, you learn that when we end the practice of self-deception we can improve the hiring process, leadership, team building, conflict resolution, accountability, transformation, and finally, personal growth and development.

Leadership and Self-Deception uses an entertaining story about an executive facing challenges at work and at home to expose the precise psychological processes that conceal our true motivations and intentions from us and trap us in a “box” of endless self-justification. Most importantly, the book shows us the way out. The book’s central insight—that the key to leadership lays not in what we do, but in who we are—has proved to have powerful resonances not only for organizational leadership, but in readers’ personal lives as well.

Since its original publication in 2000, Leadership and Self-Deception has become a word-of-mouth phenomenon. Its sales continue to increase year after year, and the book’s popularity has gone global, with editions now available in over twenty languages.
