Auditions: Alice in Wonderland

Hosted by psantoro@govst.edu

Theatre and Performance Studies (TAPS) at Governors State University presents...

Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland"
Adapted by Brainerd Duffield

Performance dates: November 1-3, 2018 at Governors State University's Center for Performing Arts

ABOUT OUR PRODUCTION:
This production will reimagine Carroll's classic world of Alice and Wonderland—where Alice plummets down the rabbit hole and becomes involved in a kaleidoscope of action, suspense, frustration... and madness—through a unique lens.

In light of recent cultural movements to call out abuses of power and privilege and to name the silences left unspoken, such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter, our production will utilize experimental theatre techniques to tell an unusual story based on Carroll's alleged erotic fascination with young girls, particularly the real 11-year-old Alice Liddell, who became the object of Carroll's affections and imagination.

Here, Alice is portrayed as a survivor trying to find—fight—her way through the aftermath of childhood sexual abuse, and to overcome the illogical and nonsensical odds that accompany trauma and survivorship. While Duffield's script does not explicitly speak to this storyline, our concept will layer this narrative onto Alice's unique journey.

Those easily triggered by challenging issues, such as childhood sexual abuse, or those unwilling to explore such issues in the creation of activist theatre, are encouraged NOT to audition. We ask that you please consider the material before agreeing to participate.

CASTING:
Casting a dynamic and diverse ensemble (10-15) of highly creative performers with depth and range—students and non-students, faculty and staff, novices and veterans.

Versatile performers with comic AND dramatic sensibilities, strong imaginations, an appreciation for the absurd, and a love for storytelling are highly encouraged to audition.

This is a non-paying production.

Prepare a 1-minute, memorized, spoken OR sung rendition of a child's nursery rhyme (e.g., "Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"). A fresh perspective to the text would be much appreciated, but is not necessary. Nor is singing experience. Audition groups will also be asked to read from the script, improvise, and move, so dress comfortably and come prepared to play.

For those cast, rehearsals will begin immediately.
